Technical needs to control the complex Microgrids

National reserves

Grid operators (Elia) have a cascade of different reserves to balance the grid leading to several Demand/Response Programs offered by a number of aggregators in Belgium.

  • R1: primary reserve (Frequency Containment Reserve)
  • R2: secondary reserve (automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve aFRR)
  • R3: Tertiary reserve (manual Frequency Restoration Reserve mFRR)

European Grid code Requirements

  • If Elia voltage > maximal allowed Value (Grid code defined) then the decentralized production plant has to lower the Elia voltage by absorbing reactive power (according to a curve)
  • If Elia grid voltage drops below a certain value (defined by Grid code), the decentralized production must increase the Elia voltage by boosting reactive power

Important to know: the Frequency in Europe is unique for the 28 connected countries and is very stable, but the voltage, is very variable over time and depending on the location and therefore requires permanent adjustment

Microgrid should be able to run in all operation modes

  • Grid connected operation of Microgrid (driven by different parameters like government incentives, energy trading, Ecological footprint etc.)
  • Island mode operation (in case of Mains quality issues, grid congestion , capacity tariff , ….)

The challenge for the automation is to switch between Grid connected and Island mode operation mode

  • Controlled switch from Grid connected to Island operation of Hybrid Microgrid
  • Uncontrolled switch from Grid connected to Island operation of Hybrid Microgrid due to disconnection of the Mains distribution
  • Uncontrolled switch from Grid connected to Island operation of Hybrid Microgrid due to earth fault in Grid

Grid parallel versus Island operation of Microgrids

  • Grid connected operation of Microgrid : Active Power regulation + Reactive Power regulation
  • Island mode operation of Microgrid : Frequency control , Voltage control, active load sharing , reactive load sharing

The challenge is to switch the asset control of all Microgrid production and storage assets between the different regulation modes and creating fast responding Loadshedding system to avoid black-outs
